In the Mouth of Madness

I’ve been reading Lovecraft lately (well, mostly Alan Moore and reminders what happened in the original stories on Wiki, which are fabulous sleep aids), so while waiting for HBO’s Scientology documentary to be seeded, I opted for this, the finale in Carpenter’s “apocalypse” trilogy. The Thing is a fucking masterpiece, and I loved that dream sequence in Prince of Darkness, but I couldn’t find anything redeeming here, not even a lewd screenshot to accompany this post. For horror to overcome rational man surely it has to be indescribably overwhelming, like the global scale of an alien threat or those nightmares I’d get with a fever, not the nonsensical frustration of a spook who keeps coming back.

Let’s settle for this groovy title instead, because Gabrielle Drake again would’ve been gratuitous. Seeing the you-foes behind you like that, now that’s scary.

How circuitous a journey even the most sedentary of us can partake: I was trying to teach the boy about battery life conservation when I had the novel idea of ensuring he’d never learn by racing the two of his gifted R/C vehicles, only to discover that both worked on the same 27 MHz frequency. I then remembered an old Speed Racer toy (from the マッハ ゴー ゴー ゴー branding, it must’ve been an import, with which I was wont to feed my bachelor emptiness) in an accessible box; but how to introduce this relic from my past to someone whose cars are computer-generated, driven by dogs or transform into robots, and talk? He’ll sit through anything, of course, so I looked up the series online, and there it was, without any confusion as to which service had secured its rights.

One search away was the more sentimental favorite, a pristine fan edit—though regrettably, remastering always seems to dump the original titles—whose saga of heroes and epic battles will probably never be topped, if it hasn’t by now.

Catapult

Three dreams last night: the first I had a clear memory of when I woke at 3am, having resumed my slumber after getting off X’s floor, but lost since; the second took place in first-person MMO (perhaps in anticipation of GW2’s imminent perspective changes), where a sizeable group of my fellow players were exploring a new area and had come upon a map under a covered open structure, like a bus stop. I was impressed that approaching it, the details became more visible. An event alert appeared above us indicating the direction to a boss named DIM, and we followed it to a catapult. The idea was to use it on ourselves (or respective avatars) to traverse some distance gap, but I was more interested by its design: little more than a black version of the Lego prop that came in X’s Batman set, with a single additional crank, which when turned once would generate enough force to launch its basket. Maybe influenced by this:

The last was yet another return to college, this time sharing an apartment with the wife and Alison Brie. I took off for class with my backpack, and wondered whether having twenty years to relive, I’d do something (more) with them.

Where am I?
