Even the Doctor said Trump was inevitable (in contrast to the optimism that Superman is), but I worry about living to see a day when we as a people can look back and heaven forbid, learn why. It’ll also be interesting to try and trace—forensically, of course—where some of his nonsense originated, whether it was Q-scripted and fumbled, anyway, or the product of a media-muddled “mind.”

Them

Morrison has a nice interview where he discusses his time with fellow non-binary Ezra Miller and says—

They came over here to Scotland and hung out, and we wrote this thing. I really liked it. Warner Bros. only gave us two weeks! It was cruelty, you know. It was hardcore. We had to be like the Flash to get this thing done, and they were looking for something quite different.

See—and forgive me if this is but the most superficial of feedback on a subject long-since settled without my knowledge, as I can’t be arsed to make a proper investigation into it—the thing that annoys me about usage in this manner is the loss of pleasure I’d once derive from constructing sentences around pronouns based on their plurality and gender-based identification. Take for example this piece which might have been just too ugly for me to compose if I were to try and describe a fluid couple, their escapades interaction and my thoughts after witnessing them. (Had to change that word to remove any uncertainty about it.)

Jason

Being as I am the product of a broken home, there’s certainly more than enough psychological trauma to explain away any apprehension with relationships, and while no curse or temptation can’t be overcome a modicum of effort, I’m still subject to a paranoid dread in the middle of my Caffeine-addled nights that the people around me aren’t real, that I don’t really know who they are. And partly responsible is that scene from my childhood, which Sandy Frank’s Standards & Practices person must’ve felt could escape censors with a terrible voiceover:

She was beautiful, even for an enemy alien robot, but she forgot, she was only a machine. They say we robots aren’t programmed to have feelings, only to be coldly efficient and perfect. But sometimes something happens, a mistake in the wiring, a surge in the power rectifier, and maybe that’s what happened to the one Jason came to know as a real girl, of codename Lucy. This should be Jason’s proudest moment, but who can blame him for feeling bad? He’ll get over it, though, and be back to win another big race soon. Don’t worry, 1-Rover-1, we weren’t built with self-destruct buttons. The good people who made us want us to show affection.

So which is it, Zark: do you have feelings or don’t you? And wasn’t she detonated remotely by Spectra, not by her own choice? Could the lifelong whirr in my ears mean the secret machinery
has been inside me all along? Am I the robot?!

World could use his Superfriend more than ever, but studio execs can’t seem to decide how to portray the god we’ll someday join in the sun, though can you blame them, the human race would probably react just as Snyder tried to depict, unsatisfactory box office and all. This was a look at the new one about the Dark Knight instead, but it was still directed by Christopher Nolan and starred Christian Bale, or at least for the first part before making way for the new team. (I’ve pre-dreamed before, but these days it’s hard not to have actual previews influence expectations or ruin imaginations.) We were in an elaborate underground facility and smug Bruce seemed deep in preparations, donning a high-tech wetsuit, to make an escape or fake his death, again. This was no ordinary movie-going experience, however; I could look past the marble-lined pool freely, like VR. And when he mounted a sportbike, I was impressed how closely the first-person perspective replicated a real riding experience, walking it back before taking off.

What kept me watching this low-budget no-fanfare new series wasn’t so much the prospect of Lovecraftian horror (which no, doesn’t just mean the spooks are invincible), but my fascination with the main character’s video restoration work. Plus, Tarkovsky’s Solaris, which is Lovecraftian. I wish they went somewhere with that, beyond the use of found-footage simply to switch perspective, maybe that’s what they were getting at with playback of all the recordings recreating reality. Why not make that the “other world”—a realm run by a being not unlike the Doom Patrol “Telephone Avatar“—instead of yet another Nexus, or even the surface of a comet, since we now have a good idea what one looks like? Still waiting for the genre smörgåsbord to top John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness, however.

One of my favorite Korean words, with the more nuanced “what the fuck” meaning than is often translated. It’s what I look for, at least when really warranted in the dialogue, from creators whose ideas may not come from the same old places (like the Doom Patrol going outside the box instead of relying on Morrison—whose own early influence I miss), and for most K-content nowadays that’s the webtoon. Not that 지리산 was ever going to be Twin Peaks, and while Hellbound and Dr. Brain aren’t high art, either, they’ve got Netflix and Apple money to go crazy with. One of them just might veer off into The Wailing.

Meanwhile the WTF that Kara Wai‘s family went through in Tracey does seem to have had some effect, or I’m grasping for the kind of correlation that’ll lead me to nightcapping with hardcore gay porn, spurring a dream I was taking a sex ed class led by an Emma Stone-looking goddess who put me on the spot by getting in my face, revealing a bikini under her regalia and asking where I’d make my mounting deposit. Her left eye opened beyond its lid as if to invite the option. Below, I still told her. Fellow student Charlie Hunnam from Queer as Folk passed by afterward, removed his shirt and revealed that his went into a condom, tactic of choice by strip club goers of old. I wondered if our instructor had office hours.

Doom Patrol—Season 3

It truly is parallel universe stuff, isn’t it, having had 27 hour-ish-long episodes already of a Doom Patrol series; sure, there have been animated versions, and evidence is ample that things have veered off course, but this is still as close as an executive will ever again greenlight an adaptation of the 90’s Morrison run. And while it’s nowhere near a perfect one (the Big Bad Bureau of Normalcy cringingly on-the-nose), some of the liberties taken for the sake of script or budget actually improve upon weaknesses in the original, such as the deus ex resolution of the Decreator arc. There may be brilliant stories like “Aenigma Regis” and “And Men Shall Call Him–Hero!” that just aren’t possible in another medium, but the showrunners have proven themselves capable of creating poignant moments for the characters, so I’ll trust them to stick the denouement. Meanwhile, why not bring in the man himself themself or a writing rival?

I didn’t really see it like last time, but maybe if they had expanded their roster without resorting to the oddly-inserted cameo, they’d have filled their ranks with the full Olympian lineup—then again, this director‘s “cut” would’ve been six hours long. And yet, if that meant more scenes like the Flash got, I’d be all for it.

Gay Marriage Bans

Not to make light in the least about today’s ruling, because affirming love in any way (even as a disembodied brain hijacking a new robot body) is only good for marriage, or any relationship. Fuck that housewife Chook and the rest of the closed-minded conservatives here with whom I clashed years ago on Prop 8.

Year One

It only took twenty-plus years, but I finally got one of my favorite comic miniseries animated (the Dark Knight Returns on the horizon; Doom Patrol beyond that, in a parallel universe through the black hole), and apart from a few omissions, like the memorable line above, it was as faithful to the source material as I might have insisted upon. Each and every storyboard, so it was almost like watching those Marvel cartoons from the Sixties “come to life”, and as glad as I was that they kept the now-retro 90’s references of Princess Caroline and the Porsche 928, I miss Mazzucchelli’s art most of all.
