The Halal Guys

June 14th, 2023 § 0 comments § permalink

I’m certain I’ve never written about this place, since I only first stepped into our location this year. (There’s been some competition from the Panini Kabob Grill around the corner.) Last week I upped my “lines” of their 130K Scoville red sauce on my platter to six, and it cost me most of the following day.

Which got me thinking again about my three pillars of taste, and how the human flowchart will eventually force me to give them up, only one at a time, if I’m lucky. Jin compared them to Ultima’s Principles of Truth, Love and Courage (which of course combine to form the Eight Virtues, because they needed more than just three cities and dungeons) and gave me the idea for a comic where I’d meet their personifications, possibly represented by Geri Halliwell
, Gene Wilder and who else but that fucking nightmare from Star Trek. They’d have to emerge from within me, since I’ve already used the cosmic pantheon for my Lance Reddick one—I’ve really got to get to work to drop them all someday like a Netflix season.

Jet Jaguar

Scuttlebutt is that Apple TV+’s “Monsterverse” series is being filmed in their new Vision Pro-compatible format, which got me imagining, aside from the possibilities like experiencing scale within the peripheral, about how they might (not) expand the franchise with characters other than the two main attractions from their last outing. Why not a more humanoid giant, maybe with a different origin since we’ve already dispensed with Mechagodzilla, even an extraterrestrial one like the 特撮 heroes they were originally trying to emulate?

Reason I dug Jet Jaguar as a kid was that grin of his resembled the one on Marvel’s short-lived Scarecrow in another artifact from my past, who would leap out of existence and bother impressionable minds without today’s resources.

Update: Fuck, this is a rehash of a 20-year-old entry (plus more future-proof links). AI writing assistants can’t come soon enough, and not the striking kind.

Lance Reddick

Walked to Chick Fil-A tonight for my free sandwich and came up with an idea to honor the man with a comic in his name, but fuck, it’ll have to come after “Row Your Dream” and “Ninja Magic” (though I recently decided I might switch up their order); he appears to warn me about making a deal with the Devil for a killer bod like his, having lost his soul after the one accelerating contract condition he chose because he never expected to happen, namely a 300-pound man winning the Best Actor Academy Award. He returns to his place among the pantheon of ripped RIP’d, like you’d see on Regular Show, including Bruce Lee and OG Khan.

God of Mosquitoes

Not an original idea, but I’m glad to have finally put it to paper for the sake of the boy’s creativity. The script was easy enough to come up with—I say that looking back, but the truth is the pentameter took some tweaking, the 昇龍拳 gag on one of my nightly runs over the bridges—though drawing hasn’t been in my wheelhouse for almost a lifetime, and a first go at inking compounded the challenge. The 0.5-0.7 gel pens I had left either too thick a stroke or not enough of one at 0.38mm, and didn’t erase at all cleanly as advertised. That and the economy of spacing for lettering, one really gains appreciation for the artistry of professionals even on a silly project like this. Not to bore you with other details, but if this wrap-up is to serve as its director’s commentary, I’d also like to add that among my many distractions (such as the lyrics to my next one) was the amusing notion the story could’ve been animated in a single continuous take.

The Mysterious Chair

The chair, a simple four-legged wooden one the kind I sat on for most of my youth, dragged me all the way over the thick carpet in the office to Rosario Dawson’s cluttered cubicle. I hadn’t brushed my teeth yet so I felt a bit embarrassed about just having woke up while she had already been on the job.

The heat and humidity had been suppressing just about any initiative to make good on all the ideas I had been accumulating, and even with my subconscious prodding me to complete the one about the chair we saw while walking to the store, it took the return of a few cooler nights before I finished the page in his journal—not that he’d notice; my hope was that it’d inspire him to make the time in his busier schedule to commemorate moments like these, however regular.

Sandman

Took an early nap while the boy reveled with the Minions, maybe in the hope that my subconscious would pervert them to my liking, but all I got were short BLM-looking guys who could travel, in trios, along the surface of a golden vase and survive being bombed but were otherwise cold and impersonal.

So the long-awaited adaptation arrives with a DC logo but none of the familiar characters in the original run, Mister Miracle, Etrigan, Wesley Dodds Sandman; Constantine they keep, and make her an impeccably dressed scoundrel as only the girl of my dreams could play? It worked on Doom Patrol and Titans (at least until Batman actually showed up), but that was when both were on the Universe.

Owlman

Heard that a script for a follow-up to Joker is already complete, which almost certainly isn’t good news. The Joaquin Phoenix tour de force captured the flashpoint of so much unrest and should have left us all alarmed by the true power of the fully-realized demagogue. Similar to its inspiration by Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, my idea for an Owlman film or mini-series would be reminiscent of Oldboy, which always struck me as a superhero origin story, too. I know DC has done all sorts of variations on the Batman mythos, Bruce, Thomas, Thomas Jr., etc., and even made Alfred the killer, but this time the faithful butler could become Owlman, failing to protect the family. At least we wouldn’t need to explain the years of training, with his military background. I’m just uncertain what might spur such a vicious search for vengeance and how to twist it in a fucked-up enough way to leave him the nihilist who’d be welcomed into the ranks by the cameo appearance of Ultraman and Superwoman at the end. One thing for sure, I want his world to be the morally corrupt one in Morrison’s Earth 2 where the default outcome isn’t good. Maybe America in its death throes, ripped from the headlines: Commissioner Gordon won’t risk police injury to prevent the Wayne slaughter. Children like Bruce and brother Tommy sacrificed in the name of gun worship. And the fruit fly’s half-life attention span of the typical NIMBY/fuck-you-I-got-mine Gotham City resident who forgets about it a week later.

Update: I think I got something, at least an idea that hasn’t been done yet in the many Korean revenge movies I’ve seen, and that’s to have Alfred be Bruce’s real father, not by way of a predictable affair with Martha, but as a donor for his good friend Thomas—who was his lover instead? Or a ménage à trois? Hmm, seems like it’d be hard secret to live with for even their short time together, and while the angry vigilantism could very well result as a response (after all, Batman’s did), give me a bit longer to work out how it all gets fucked up for him by the end.

Update update: Bruce secretly survives, but becomes Owlman’s Joker.
