McRib 2021

Damn Marxists on r/antiwork, bless their hearts, call for a boycott during McRib season? I suppose just the mention of it in this context has disqualified me from their ranks, fucking wannabe leftist that I am, knowing full well the plight of labor but availing myself of its fruits. It’s too bad, too, because I’ve recently gotten into the habit of walking or biking there with a smug sense of self-satisfaction that doing so somehow offsets their insalubrious menu; by not eating in I can do my part to stave off breakthrough infection and disparage the Lexus-driving Koreans who have moved back inside from their makeshift camps in the parking lot; and ogling the occasional black-clad employee who hands me extra BBQ sauce without the least concern for an adequate wage to be objectified by old pervs.

I’ve been hoping the writer of Signal and Kingdom would deliver again with 지리산, but the time traveling ghost story so far has neither the pace of a Netflix season nor sufficient serial killer count; then here comes fabulous fifty-year-old Lady Vengeance 이영애 (with ten years on Sassy Girl 전지현 herself) in a take on Killing Eve that’s at least a decade too early for it to please the shippers yet does a slick job aping its style, right down to the soundtrack, with only the usual anime/webtoon trappings of K-drama holding it back. 근데 왜 나 알은척 안 하니?

Update: That was two episodes in, I still haven’t seen a more stunning moment than that one at the end of them, and with only two to go, I’m handily convinced this is my favorite series of the year. Korean one, ever, for sure, the Oldboy joke and the Chun Doo-hwan certificate framed on the wall of the old-timer sealed it.

Why I Hate Flying Now

Bad enough the airlines don’t mandate vaccination, they’re back to maximizing their fuel economy by packing their planes and expecting passengers to expose themselves to each other for little bags of nuts. But what’s affected air travel the most for the worse surely has to be the course of self-entitlement that many of us took in the face of the pandemic. Last trip I took I got quite worked up over a Vietnamese woman three rows in front of me with a propensity for pulling her mask a few inches off her mouth to speak to her husband, which she somehow managed to keep up for the duration of the five-hour flight. Who has that much to discuss with their spouse? Count on Reddit for examples on the periphery of human experience (in other words, sus), but the one which would’ve been the death of me from so many cuts has to be the woman who heard read took fucking screenshots of someone talking behind her back and big surprise, didn’t like it. She says his phone was “up a foot away from his face, which was a foot away from [hers]”, confirming the comment that she “was reading his messages because she was sharing his seat w/ him.” In all fairness, economy is cramped as hell, and I’ve certainly had choice words on any occasion it was alright my wife knew about, but at least I put them in a small-ass font and different Asian language. Important clarification of the title is to add “(with People)” to everything I hate.

Redditor’s work is all the more remarkable because it was done from scratch and not with Mars money (as eye-opening and welcome as it was, on this anniversary of my last job change—what a segue to my upcoming meeting with a former employer, who’s threatening us with an opportunity to return to family office drama). And uncanny valley or no, I’ve always liked multi-angle portraits.

I admit I was also suckered by the Ride video, so instead of giving the YouTube any more views, I embedded a grainier Gfycat that doesn’t even play in Firefox. Unlike with Monster Hunter Rise, I did my due diligence before starting upon the certain path of material discontent with a console that’s hard enough to obtain, a new television to support it, the sound system I’d always promised and of course a couch to replace our aging one. If not for Nintendo’s almost anti-technology stance, I might be disconnected from gaming altogether, having been left unimpressed at the PS3/Blu-Ray generation. There’s definitely a leap to be made to 4K+ and SSD storage, but I’m with the commenter who asked for them to be used for first-person crashes, too, the experience needs to offer more.

Anti-corruption’s generally a subject of police drama that’s too steeped in realism for my interest, and most of my series have focused on the pursuit of serial killers (Der Pass being an excellent recent example), but do they ever manage to deliver on the suspense in spite of the one in belief required for a criminal conspiracy to go for as long as it has. Or the good guys, depending how cynical we want to be. I like how effectively the rousing credits theme elevates the gravity of the situation, reminding me of the episode breaks in classic Doctor Who, even if the self-serving behavior of a “bent copper” or the whole OCG for that matter doesn’t necessarily warrant it. Without my nightly excursions to 7-11 for a Super Big Gulp and a jalapeño-covered hot dog or Gansitos, I’ve learned to live without the need to feel part of something bigger going on out there, unlike those poor targeted individuals paranoid schizophrenics whose lunatic rants will occasionally grace even my local Twitter searches, and prefer to watch it all play out in a thankfully controlled environment. Annoying that the live broadcast airs only half-an-hour after my second Moderna dose tomorrow, leaving little time to gauge side effects.

Somewhat related dream took place at night-time on a street in what might have been London, too, where I had just picked up some warm food but without suitable containment struggled to keep it together against my body. The lyrics to this time-traveling show were more reminiscent of Inspector Spacetime: “What have you seen, who have you been/Not so much where but more of when.“

Not much more to add than what’s already been archived on Reddit for the life of the Internet, but personally it pains me to corroborate that the 2-nonenal or 加齢臭 from our decaying heads does indeed serve as flypaper. It must’ve been so obvious while I swatted away and deluded myself into blaming the Mountain Dew.

Trolls

An enterprising Reddit hacker hijacked the popular sub and spoiled much of the remaining season (had to double-check about Hot Pie, because if anything that was a squandered opportunity to bring up Lady Stoneheart instead), proving not only is it not what you know and others don’t, but what they don’t want to.
